Amanda Gaines has a PhD in creative writing from Oklahoma State University. She received her MFA from West Virginia University. She's an Appalachian writer, born and raised in southern West Virginia.
Her creative writing and research look at gender performance, cultural mythos, the body, and popular culture. She's interested in contemporary horror and surrealism, often looking into how the body manifests grief, rage, and joy--how memory and notions of the self are fluid, hybrid creatures.
Her books-in-progress include "Doll Parts," an essay collection on gender, violence, and memory, "Girl Fables, Gospel," a narrative poetry collection surrounding an impetuous angel on Earth, as well as "Animaled," a lyric essay collection that contemplates Appalachia, mental illness, desire, and femininity. She's also working on a collection of slipstream short stories that feature "unlikeable" women in rural landscapes.
Her work has been nominated several times for Best of the Net, and her essay, "Purplest," was listed as a notable in 2022's Best American Essays.
